NukeInfo is a project of the non-profit, the School of Earthy Arts. This website is for all citizens to share information on nuclear radiation. We artists, videographers and writers, round up and make easily available in a website, nuclear radiation information and art as it affects the people, animals and environment of the Pacific Northwest. We link to real active and professionally informed environmental groups and government agencies to facilitate our fellow citizens in easy research and understanding of radiation dangers and safety issues in our region.
We research, interview, connect the dots, allow ourselves to react deeply and then redeliver this nuke info to the public in a new, organized fresh and moving way. NukeInfo offers illustrated and emotionally charged nuclear art and info. Our website is a public forum and gallery for this purpose.
NukeInfo shares information at regional environmental and peace events and rounds up folks to speak up at public hearings considering regional nuclear activities. It organizes nuclear radiation research, studies and writing groups--such as one in Eugene Oregon for studying and banning DU, Depleted Uranium weapons.
NukeInfo also organizes presentations, talks and multi-media events such as " Uncle Sam’s Trucking ". This event will be a Nuclear Information Night for Lane County Citizens, held in Eugene OR following the Universities Environmental Law Conference. We welcome you to attend this very important meeting at Harris Hall in the County Building from 6:30-9:30 March 7, 2010.

Our NukeInfo website will grow before your very eyes in 2011. In a chain reaction of facts affecting folks to make art we will evoke immediate responses from even more folks and to try to find out answers to their questions. Much information has been kept from the public for security sake by our government. Help us decipher what it all means and ensure that we are all safe in our homes and in our travels.
At times it has been kept from the public because it would be deemed horrific, despicable, cruel, murderous and unAmerican--almost like bombing our own people. Our own government conducted radiation experiments and had projects developing weapons, testing our ability as a country and as a species to hold up to various levels of radiation that could result from a nuclear power plant accident or from a nuclear bomb detonation.
The Navy conducted “the Green Run” at Hanford Dec. 2 & 3 of 1943 ?????, This experiment released highly radioactive fresh “ Green” radioactive iodine gas, from the Hanford facility, before it had a few days to cool down ( break down radioactively ), to see what would happen and how they could monitor the effect with new measuring tools they had gotten. The poison cloud headed right for Spokane on the strong winds, across the Palouse rich farmland & various Indian reservations on the way. It settled on the grass, the cows ate and made it into milk. The children drank it, and now--70 years later--4000 folks in our region are suing the government for Thyroid Cancer they or their dead family member got. The government still says there is no proof that holds them to paying the medical or funeral bills--or financially supporting the families whose breadwinners have been taken down.
Our own patriotic soldiers--Atomic Veterans--were positioned as guinea pigs in trenches at the Nevada Test site, by the Bikini atoll. We did atom bomb experimental detonations there and for 30 years their ensuing weakness, cancer, bone embrittlement, teeth and hair falling out and other radiation-caused illnesses and deaths were not recognized as government caused. Because of our governments unaccountability their medical expenses and living support were not paid for and the people sacrificing their lives to protect our country were neglected and betrayed.
Now we have a new form of Atomic Veterans--DU exposed soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Balkans. Our government started the use of DU--Depleted Uranium weapons--tank penetrator shells made from nuclear waste, under the Bush Sr, administration in 1990. We have scattered our nuclear waste this way using these DU rounds, which Iraq veterans say work “extremely efficiently” destroying tanks. DU is left as a fine microscopic dust, blowing around the countries we invade or assist, being inhaled and absorbed by all humans, animals and plants. More of our soldiers have died of Gulf War Sickness than were killed in that war and birth defects and cancers of innocent civilians have spiked in those countries. Our own soldiers and vets are not being taken care of because more corroborating evidence of where they were stationed needs to be discovered and analyzed. Now our country sells DU weapons made by our private companies to other countries. NukeInfo supports the International Ban of DU Weapons. Other countries are recognizing the danger and we insist that the U.S. join the ban to show we care about this serious issue. By meeting as a writers/researchers group to create articles that expose the dirt on DU we hope to make a difference and end the immoral use of this poisonous substance.
The bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which caused such terrible innocent suffering, did successfully end WWII. However it also served our government as live experiments on humans with two different types of newly invented atom bombs.
The world was shocked, disgusted and jealous of our power over others and then they quickly set to work developing their own nuclear power and weapons. Our country has tried to stay as top dog in the arms race, trying to outdo all other countries, especially the USSR, and pointing a few nukes at every one we find out is pointed at us or our nukes positioned in other countries. Now the Pentagon wants to replace our nuclear arsenal making a large fresh batch of more reliable nuclear warheads. We exclaim that our resources can be better spent! The U.S. does not have money to spend on another cold war! Are we to have nothing left to spend on the real issues facing the U.S. right now?

Now, 64 years since Hiroshima, nobody has unleashed another atom bomb. But about 10 countries have their own nuclear weapons arsenals--with nuclear warheads on missiles strategically pointed at their enemies. The hurried production of these weapons has caused toxic and radioactive pollution in all those countries. It will take much money to clean up the radioactive messes that were made before we knew better. Most governments do not want the public to know, because they do not want to pay for the cleanup and they really most often don’t know how to do it yet.
The Hanford Nuclear Bomb production site in Eastern Washington, that was shut down in the end of the 80s, is the biggest radioactive site of the Northern Hemisphere. It is the largest engineering problem of our country. It costs our taxpayers $2 Billion dollars a year to just to try to clean it up. Still, the radioactive waste dumped into unlined trenches, in thin rustable drums or single walled tanks are leaking underground into the last free water salmon spawning grounds--the Hanford Reach, of the Columbia River. It then goes downstream past agricultural irrigators, out to the Pacific Ocean and around the world, causing mutations and cancer. This Nuke Info site will help citizens of our area understand the nuke waste cleanup project at Hanford, get Hanfords waste cleaned up as fast and effectively as possible, and prevent this riverine place from becoming the country’s high level nuclear waste dump.
The Bush administration pointed to "clean" Nuclear Power as the way to meet our country’s energy needs without causing greenhouse gas emissions burning coal or oil. We at NukeInfo do not believe nuclear power is safe or clean. There is still no known safe way to dispose of or store nuclear waste. We want the one remaining commercial nuclear reactor--the “ Columbia Generating Station “ on the Hanford site--shut down. It’s in a seismic zone and is unsafe for the life in the Columbia River all the way out to the sea. we still are generating high level nuclear waste there which has no place to be safely stored. It delivers 7% of the electricity to the Bonneville Power Administration--BPA (the big power cats of our region). There are also sites suggested on the Snake River for construction of new nuclear power plants. We need to all stand up and say no to energy that sacrifices our safety and the safety of our planet for generations to come!
The Corvallis, Oregon OSU School of Engineering operates a “Research & Training Nuclear Reactor” which is about to test run some new experimental nuclear fuel. We don’t know if that is safe, near so many people in the city & the Oregon State University. Plus OSU , sponsored by the federal DOE, has spawned a Corvallis company, “ NuScale “ to construct and sell mini-nuclear reactors--SMRs. We hope to keep you informed about this because it seems that it is not public knowledge that we are experimenting with questionably safe materials in our very own community.
This NukeInfo website will be acting as a community repository of found nuclear info and opinions in essays, factoids and annotated links. Here you will be able to find other anti-nuke groups, newspaper articles and relevant government agencies to communicate with. A gallery of sincere art and poetry is offered as a creative and peaceful way to express our concern and protest to the use of atomic poisons. In order to be well informed we also invite pro-nuke information. Let us be real with each other about this important issue and let the truth sort itself out. All are invited to join us. We hope to tickle the dragons tail. We want to lure it out of secrecy and into the public square to show it’s true dangerous colors. Show the powers that be that the people of America won’t stand for it anymore! As stewards of the Northwest and the Earth, for the animals and for the protection of the innocent children, we will peacefully close down the nuclear power and weapons machine--to deliver a better world to the next generations. Say no to birth defects and cancer caused by DNA-blasting ionizing radiation!
We are not unbiased. We do not want nuclear power, nuclear weapons, nuclear waste, or food irradiation! We are working to protect the planet from millions of years of radioactive pollution through powerful art and information delivery.
